Catholic University Fitness & Recreation is back and we are committed to your health and safety as we reopen our doors. This document outlines the practical application of prevention strategies to reduce the spread of COVID-19 due to the use of the Kane Fitness Center. We recognize fitness and recreation on campus provide opportunities for students to reach and maintain fitness goals, specific skills, mental well-being, and social-emotional health. We continue to support our student community with their safety as our #1 priority. 

All guidelines listed below follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Catholic University protocol, in addition to the D.C. Health Guidelines set by Mayor Bowser.

  • Hours of Operation

    The Kane Fitness Center will operate on limited hours. All operating hours will be posted on our website and social media. Please note the fitness center will close 12:30pm-1:30pm Monday-Friday for a facility deep clean. There will be no midday closure on Saturday & Sunday.

  • Fitness Appointments & Time Slots

    In order to use the Kane Fitness Center, online fitness appointments must be booked in advance through IMLeagues. No walk-ups are allowed. Appointment time slots are 75 minutes in duration. You are able to arrive at any time during your appointment time slot, however at the end of the appointment, all patrons must exit for a facility clean prior to the next appointments.

    Appointments can be booked up to 3 days in advance.

    If you are unable to attend your scheduled appointment, it is mandatory to cancel your appointment in IMLeagues order to allow a student to fill your spot. Each appointment has limited capacity, therefore it is necessary to cancel appointments you are not able to attend! Here’s how to cancel an appointment.

    1. Log onto your IMLeagues account
    2. Click on the registered session
    3. At the top of the session page, there is a banner stating “You are currently enrolled in this session”. On the right side of the banner, click the red button “Unregister for Session”
  • "No-Show" Accountability Process

    This semester we will be introducing a new accountability process for students who "no-show" to scheduled appointments without cancelling. Since we have a limited capacity, it is necessary for students to cancel their appointment, so another student can fill their place. 

    Students who do not show for a booked appointment, will be sent a Reminder Email on the first no-show. On the 2nd no-show, students will be sent a Suspension Warning Email. On the 3rd no show, the students will be sent a Suspension Notice Email and their IMLeague account will be suspended for 7 days and they will be unable to use the fitness center during that time.

  • Check-In

    Before you enter the front door of the fitness center, there will be outdoor physical distance markers from the door before entering to ensure only one patron is checked-in at a time. Please stand in the “lobby area” before entering the gym and checking-in. Once the patron in front of you is checked-in, you will be instructed by the front desk assistant to enter.

    Upon entering the facility, you will check-in with a front desk staff member to ensure you have an appointment. There is a sneeze guard at the front desk.

  • Face Covering Policy

    Due, to the updated D.C. Health Guidance Order, all patrons are REQUIRED to wear a face covering inside the facility at all times, including during exercise. If you do not have a face covering when you arrive, you will not be allowed to enter the facility.

    Additionally, face coverings must be worn properly - covering nose and mouth. Our staff will be walking around checking.


    Medical evidence shows that face coverings are one of the best ways to combat COVID-19, so please use these tips to help stay safe wearing a face covering while working out. 

    • Test it! If the face covering restricts your breathing without exercising, it will not be comfortable to wear during exercise. Try exercising outdoors in a face covering before exercising indoors.
    • Use the adaptation phase! You may not be able to execute workouts at the same intensity while wearing a face covering. Make sure to start your workouts slower than usual in order to adapt to working out in a face covering.
    • Bring multiple! If you tend to sweat a lot during workouts, bring an additional face covering and replace when it becomes damp.
    • Choose the right face covering! Face coverings should be large enough to cover your nose & mouth and feel snug around your cheeks.
  • Capacity & Floor Plan

    In following the D.C. Health Guidance plan, we are not to exceed 5 people per 1,000 square feet inside the facility, therefore the capacity of the fitness center will be limited at a maximum of 25 patrons at one time.

    There will be floor plan procedures such as one-way walking arrows and specific entry and exit doors.

  • Offline Equipment

    Some equipment will be offline in order to follow distancing guidelines. Do not touch or move any offline equipment. 

  • Heightened Deep Cleaning

    The Kane Fitness Center uses a top-grade, EPA-approved disinfectant and wipes proven to kill viruses like COVID-19. All patrons are required to disinfect all equipment before and after each use using the provided disinfectant wipes. There are additional hand sanitizers and disinfectant wipe dispensers for your convenience.

    Kane staff members will increase cleaning procedures during their shift, including a thorough cleaning between each appointment slot end, and the beginning of the next appointment. 

  • Personal Items - Cubby Storage, Locker Storage, Lost & Found

    You may bring small bags and personal belongings to the fitness center, however cubby and locker storage use may be limited.

    There will be no Lost & Found, so only bring what you need. If possible, keep personal items with you.

  • Water Fountain & Bathroom Use

    The water fountain will be available to refill personal bottles only. There will be no drinking directly from the fountain. 

    Our restrooms will remain open however, use may be limited due to physical distancing with others.

  • Staff Health & Hygiene

    Employees will take these additional steps to ensure proper hygiene while working. All staff members are required to:

    • Wear a face covering at all times inside the facility
    • Wash hands upon arrival to work, after cleaning equipment, using the restroom, and leaving the shift
    • Support heightened cleaning procedures including, increase equipment cleaning rotation and use of a List N disinfectant proven to kill viruses like COVID-19
    • Stay home if feeling any symptoms and report it to their supervisor
  • Group Fitness Classes

    Students can access virtual group fitness classes through the Recreation Movement. Rec Movement provides on-demand and live fitness classes from over 100+ different Universities across the U.S. All Catholic University students, faculty, and staff will be able to access different fitness classes (Zumba, Yoga, HIIT, Strength, Meditiation, and more!) with their email address.

  • Personal Training

    There will be no personal training sessions until further notice.
